DAVIS PARTNERSHIP ARCHITECTS,
davispartners.comCHALLENGE:To design a hospital addition that implemented the Green Guide for Healthcare and used only local materials, products and vendors.SOLUTION:Create an integrated, multi-use expansion that focuses on a mountain aesthetic and green design practices.DESIGN DETAILS: To create a more corporate look than the
original hospital, the designers used exterior finishes in the interior, such as slate and brick. | To bring more warmth into the spaces, water was used as a concept throughout; a large waterfall was designed at the entry. | Updated finishes were chosen carefully to maintain a cohesive look with the existing finishes.

 

HOSPITALITYLa Hacienda ClubKIMBERLY TIMMONS | KINBERLY TIMMONS INTERIORS,ktinteriors.netCHALLENGE:Create a comfortable and intimate clubhouse within a large building while abiding by stringent local energy codes.SOLUTION: Embracing the philosophy of “resort living,” this clubhouse for an active 50+ adult community uses timeless and sustainable design.

DESIGN DETAILS: The concept of “modern in the spirit of tradition” pays homage to the rich history and unique landscape of Arizona. | A warm palette and natural materials give the clubhouse a modern
yet timeless appeal. | Though the building has many functions, the spaces seamlessly flow together by maintaining a consistency in materials, color palette, lighting and furnishings.

SINGLE SPACEWenger, Maker of the Genuine Swiss Army KnifeJENNY WEST | GENSLER,gensler.comCHALLENGE:To create a visually appealing space and brand awareness reusing as much of the historic space as possible, all within an extremely short time frame.SOLUTION: By organizing a group of “trusted advisors” to oversee the project, a sustainable, authentic space was completed in four months.

DESIGN DETAILS: 85% of the existing space was left intact: existing floors, ceiling, and brick and stone walls. | Brand iconography and material translations in conjunction with the store layout and merchandising strategy were used to provide the “map” to script the customer experience of the Wenger legacy story. | A historic hand-painted wall art mural based on vintage Swiss travel posters references the rich history of a legendary brand and utilizes existing architectural conditions.

EDUCATIONALCasey Middle SchoolDENISE POZVEK | RB+B ARCHITECTS, rbbarchitects.comCHALLENGE:Redesign a 600-student middle school to meet LEED Platinum standards while housing its historic 1924 roots.SOLUTION: Saving the original building was cost-prohibitive; however, the designers were able to incorporate some exterior walls and recycle other original materials.

DESIGN DETAILS: Classrooms are grouped in teaching team arrangements around common spaces where student lockers, study/break-out space and teacher planning areas are located. | The three-story classrooms are north facing, allowing maximum daylight into the learning areas with minimal glare. | Wood gym flooring from the demolished building was reused as wall paneling and benches.

UNDER 15K SQUARE FEETSemper Fidelis Memorial Park ChapelCURTIS FENTRESS | FENTRESS ARCHITECTS,fentressarchitects.comCHALLENGE: Optimize the transparency effect with glass walls while concealing utilities; express the chapel’s natural setting through material choices.SOLUTION: Collaboration with all trades, superior craftsmanship and attention to every detail resulted in a reverent, museum-quality space.

DESIGN DETAILS: Transparent glass walls are etched with words expressing the Marine Corps’ time-honored ideals. | Artfully concealed utility systems create a clean aesthetic. | Materials such as natural fieldstone, timber, stone and granite speak to the chapel’s natural setting.

OVER 15K SQUARE FEETUnited States Olympic Committee HeadquartersSUSAN KOHUTH | OZ ARCHITECTURE, ozarch.comCHALLENGE: Create a dynamic, professional environment and incorporate all departments into one facility, all while pursuing LEED Silver status.SOLUTION: Develop work space standards to create consistency in space allocation and utilization; use bold graphics to energize environment.

DESIGN DETAILS: Large, visual graphics are used throughout to integrate branding, capture energy and reflect the company’s history. | Full-wall graphics printed on vinyl are key focal points that bring in vivid colors. | Finishes throughout provide a clean backdrop allowing the imagery to be the focal point.

RESIDENCE OVER 7,000 SQUARE FEETSloan ResidencePETRA RICHARDS | PETRA RICHARDS INTERIORSCHALLENGE: Build a mountain home and integrate homeowners’ Asian heritage into the design while working around snow, homeowner association covenants and excavating restrictions.SOLUTION: Fit all the client wishes into a modestly-sized house mixing Asian, mountain and modern elements into the new custom home.

DESIGN DETAILS: The designers traveled to Myanmar to collect old and new Asian pieces. | Asian accessories are combined with soft furnishing and fabrics, creating warm and comfortable spaces. | “Mountain” accessories such as large-scale chandeliers and faux-fur throws add a sense of place to this Aspen home.

Single Space Resi SINGLE SPACEGreenwood Village RemodelCHER SCHUCK | CS DESIGN, ING., csdesignshomes.comCHALLENGE:To create a sense of two separate spaces and functional storage within one bathroom for two growing boys.SOLUTION: An ingenious “double sink” and creative allocation of storage space; artistic and playful yet timeless design.

DESIGN DETAILS: A cabinet and concrete “trough” sink
centered on a stone wall can be used at the same time from
opposite sides. | Separate, built-in storage keeps personal items organized and clutter at bay. | A double-sided mirror hung from the ceiling eliminates the need for a permanent wall.

 

MERCHANDISINGColumbine Street Spec HouseJENNIFER MEDOFF | DRAGONFLY DESIGNSCHALLENGE: To merchandise a builder spec home in a creative and colorful way while remaining universal in style;
work with limited resources and a three-week time frame.SOLUTION: Use a warm earth-tone palette, highlighted with
reds, blues and purples, as well as clean-lined furnishings and
interesting accessories.DESIGN DETAILS: Custom finishes, such as a stained glass
window in the wine cellar door and a two-story chandelier in the
foyer, add drama. | Earthy textures of stone, wood and hand-troweled plaster create a rich interior space. | Furnishings were kept neutral with smaller punches of color and arranged to maximize views of structural focal points.

RESIDENCE UNDER 3,000 SQUARE FEETArtful Urban LivingKATE DIXON | HMH ARCHITECTURE + INTERIORS, hmhai.comCHALLENGE:To help empty-nesters make the transition from a large suburban home to a simpler urban lifestyle.SOLUTIONS: Design an urban loft that epitomizes organization and careful zoning of space as well as the personality
of the homeowners.

DESIGN DETAILS: Large sliding doors separate the TV room from the main living space; the TV room also serves
as a guest room. | The guest bathroom has a glass sliding door that transforms it from a powder room into a full
bathroom. | The personalities of the spaces range from sculptural and whimsical to formal and orderly.

RESIDENCE BETWEEN 3,000 & 7,000 SQUARE FEETCountry ManorDONNA POCCI | POCCI DESIGN GROUP, poccidesigngroup.comCHALLENGE: Give an open-concept feel to a dark home with unusable clustered spaces; take
advantage of mountain views and daylighting.SOLUTION: Integrate all aspects of the built environment into the surrounding landscape as a single
whole.DESIGN DETAILS: Windows, doors, decks and terraces were arranged to take advantage of the
evolving landscape and mountain views. | The kitchen can accommodate catering of large parties yet
feels cozy when one or two people are cooking. | Warm woods and a combination of traditional and
antique furnishings create a “country manor” feel.

KITCHENLookout Mountain Kitchen RemodelKELLY PETTYCHALLENGE:Update a kitchen for a young family that hosts both sports-team dinners and intimate adult gatherings.SOLUTION: Design a safer, better functioning U-shaped layout that provides a sense of space and additional prep,
clean-up and storage areas.

DESIGN DETAILS: Contemporary materials, cabinetry and appliances add up to a timeless design that will continue to
function well for a growing family. | A center island with prep sink accommodates multiple cooks. | Large, high-end
appliances, including two dishwashers and a wine cooler, make entertaining a snap.

rainwater collection to sustain rooftop gardens. | Water features and abundant plant life creates a natural, serene
environment. | Striking architecture speaks to a respected company’s world headquarters.

DESIGN ELEMENTSCrop Production ServicesLYNN COIT | BOX STUDIOS, boxformation.comCHALLENGE:Create a unique millwork piece for a receptionist desk that meets universal design standards, looks weightless and uses sustainable materials.SOLUTION: Design a desk that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing—a statement piece in a large, multifunctional reception space.

DESIGN DETAILS: A rust-colored transaction top draws your eye while giving the desk a pop of color. | Wrought
iron trim accentuates details in the desk and visually links to the light fixtures above. | The desk successfully stands out
as a feature piece and integrates beautifully into the overall design of the grand reception area.

STUDENT DESIGNSèk de lavi, A Haitian OrphanageASHLEY JACOBS | STUDENT, Art Institute of ColoradoCHALLENGE:: “Design something that matters in the world,” is the challenge this young design student accepted from her teacher.SOLUTION: Design a Haitian orphanage that was not only concerned with physical space but also giving the children and people of Haiti a strong sense of life.

DESIGN DETAILS: Regional materials and products were used in all phases of design. | Fun, bright colors as well as recycled art honors Haitian culture. | Garage doors and window walls bring in large amounts of light as well as help with ventilation.

LEED building standards.SOLUTION: Design an interior space that works with the character of the building and becomes a natural
extension of the architecture.DESIGN DETAILS: Traditional materials, such as wood and polished marble, were used in unexpected ways
to add interest. | An organic approach to lighting softens and complements the linear edges, visually and acoustically dividing spaces with distinct functions. | Modern furnishings and bold colors in upholstery and paint infuse energy into the space.

poccidesigngroup.comCHALLENGE:: In six-months’ time, renovate a home with
an emphasis on quality, comfort and beauty within a tight budget while the homeowners lived in the house.SOLUTION: Develop a project that doesn’t say “traditional” or “modern,” but expresses the clients’ personalities, European roots and passion for travel.DESIGN DETAILS: All the rooms were redesigned to open onto the new garden terrace. | The overall feel of the décor was updated by adding contemporary accents and modern furnishings and accessories to traditional architecture. | A warm, neutral color palette is used throughout the house, creating a cohesive, open feel.
